How to Replace an audi smart key replacement G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is situated at the top of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located at the edges of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate fuel and boost. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can activate spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of the possibility of a chain stretch or jump in the chain link of the upper chain. However, the error code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit tricky because there are two connector pins, and they perform different functions however the best way to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is fully operational, it should read around 1000 ohms. If you're having issues with this sensor, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, I experienced an abrupt drop in power as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors aren't firing any more. I took out the spark plugs this morning, three were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was dry. When I start the engine, there are no sparks, i place a tissue on top of each injector hole, the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th one stays closed. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I found zero ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is not plugged in and is running fine when it is connected however it is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even if it is not plugged in, shows temperatures of -49c. Also, i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.

I'm not certain what to do, but i think i've pretty much eliminated everything else. However, i'm afraid that I may have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please chime in! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find the spare in a salvage shop or a parts store. It is simple to test them - simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing up). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU
