Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma occurs when asbestos fibers irritate the tissues that surround many of your organs. The cancerous cells begin to grow.

The lining of the lung (pleura) is the most common site of mesothelioma. Less common forms affect the lining of the abdomen and the lining around the testicles.

Doctors can diagnose mesothelioma by looking at samples of tissue or fluid for cancerous cells. They may also order blood tests and imaging tests.

Symptoms

Mesothelioma affects the organ lining in different parts of the body. The symptoms vary depending on the location of the tumor, such as in the pleura or peritoneum (lung lining), for the peritoneal and pleural cancers.
